Seymour Take One (PC remake/remaster) - Release

Alright, here it is. The first release of Seymour Take One remake/remaster I worked on for quite a bit that I am a bit more confident to actually release.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gDtSoSO1Ly9rp2ffgCbtnO-vzn35WYMi/view?usp=drive_link

For now, only the PC-Windows release x64. Other builds will follow. If you want to rush me for some particular build, tell me, I tend to priorize my other projects.

I highly recommend playing it on your TV using a controller, it works very well. You may find bugs, though I tried my best to wash them out.

This remake-title was originally intended to become a Continuum 93 exclusive, but I changed my mind as I often do since it would have limited somehow the features that are now enabled with this release. So, this was built with the MonoGame framework using C# as primary language.

The map editor is still there though you won't be able to tap into it (...by using the TAB key) until you turn the "allowMapEditor" from settings.json to true.

There is a larger adventure planned for Seymour which is mostly already well written but I don't know when I'll get around starting on it. Probably this mid-summer hopeful to finish it until this next Xmas.

For now, enjoy this and, ... I'll be back!

:)

@Adam, I'm not sure whether you can host this (it's rather big, >120Mb), if you can, I'd be grateful, if not let me know, I'll figure something out, maybe on itch or something.

Cheers!

I'm back already finished it, or did I do something wrong and it restarted?

@rin_kagamine You most likely did nothing wrong. This is a very short game originally :)

Have you seen the "Congratulations" screen? If so, you did everything alright!

@enthusiastguy Well, good news. I have surprisingly managed to upload the game onto Yolkfolk's server.

I've not tested the link, but it should work.

https://yolkfolk.com/media/games/seymour/SeymourTakeOne_PCRemake_1.0.552b_x64.zip

Yeah, the file size is extremely high for a small game, especially for someone like me who has limited Internet data.

As for the game itself, I've managed to play through it with no issues. :smile:

Now that its uploaded, I'll have it added it to the games database later on. {characters}:sey:

Indeed, for now it's like that since it basically includes everything from .NET you need to run it as is, however, I'll further look into this and hopefully drastically reduce the filesize on it. Will soon get back to you on this.

I am working on the actual manual for it and I have an idea of a printable "box" for it, but meanwhile, do you need any artwork files? If so, just let me know what and what dimensions.

Thanks a lot!

If you mean screenshots from the game, I can manage that myself knowing that F10 turns off CRT/scanlines.
But you're welcome to supply your own if you wish, which is one Title screen, and between 2 and 4 In game screens

As for the game's logo to put on the database entry, I normally deal with that, but again, you're welcome to make your own to put on the site.
Don't worry about the size of it though, we can handle it.

@enthusiastguy It's now on Yolkfolk.

Wow, that looks awesome! I really don't need to do anything, all that stuff looks great the way you set it up!

I will probably provide later on a pdf "manual" and another pdf that would allow the user to print his own box for this, should they want that. Those should be small, I can include them in the downloadable package (that I do expect to shrink a bit by then) or provide them as separate downloads, up to you how you think it's best there. :)

One slight note, maybe it's a good idea to mention in the trivia that gamepads are supported. I, for one, love using the gamepad for this kind of games.

Thanks again, looks absolutely awesome! :lol:

Alright, here are some other distributions:

1. The mac arm64 package. Meaning it will work on the M1, M2 etc, not the earlier Intel macs.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1W2XWtBQ_Rida7oH0HXNYg_2e0n4SxoLN/view?usp=sharing

Some heads up here:

- You can see this package is very small in comparison with the PC version (roughly 25 Mb). I suspect that's because the compiler cut the video library alltogether since it's most likely a windows-only implementation. Seymour Take One does NOT use it currently, since I have no videos embedded, but the editor which is under this game does and most likely on Mac will lose this ability;

- Security is a pain on Mac. You need to go to the security center and allow this application AND several DLL files it uses, one after another. Fortunately you need to do this once only. However, I never like to suggest others to bypass Apple's security for anything, so I kindly suggest to leave this as a last resort, try to play the PC version.

2. The mac x86 package. This is the one that works on those older intel MacBooks:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1b63tt4DQ7zlk5DiCPfUYaSLyLqk2R2T-/view?usp=drive_link

Please observe the same heads-up notes as for #1, above.

3. The linux-x64 package. This 'should' work on linux distributions that are running on x64 CPUs, including the Steam Deck. I am yet to test this game on Steam deck but I am pretty confident it will work right out of the box with one note. If the native buttons on the Deck do not seem to trigger anything, go to settings and change the current controller. Steam deck owners should know exactly what I mean, if not ask here and let me know what happens and I'll assist.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NaDRWayAYWiIkI5k4VwPL2d_lbJNl-1V/view?usp=sharing

- Here too, it seems the video library is cut-off, so that (currently unused) feature is not available, should you want to use it.

If you have any trouble, feel free to tell me about it and I'll help.

P.S. if you have any other trouble runing it on these distributions, one failsafe is to make sure you have dotnet installed and in the game folder you open a terminal and run:

dotnet Take1.dll

I like the look of the graphics (I made my own version of the main Seymour game using the Dizzy character, which is why I noticed the quality of the graphics) so I wanted to play this game, but I can't get it to load on my windows 11 pc, I have downloaded the game onto a usb stick and wan't to try it on my windows 10 pc.

Gratefull if you could give the idiot's guide to downloading the game onto my windows 10 pc and where to stick it and what to do to make it work... pretty please!!

@grandad - Strange, I'm on a Windows 11 laptop and it works fine for me. {yolkfolk}:scratch:
I just pasted all the contents into a folder.

@enthusiastguy - I've added the Mac downloads, but I may have added the wrong details on the links as I have absolutely little to no understanding of Non-Windows operating systems in general.

Also, the link to the Linux download gives an "Access Denied" error.

@khaosadz

For that denied error, I "think" you need to chmod it. So, in effect:

1. Open a terminal that points to the game directory

2. Type

chmod +x Take1

this should set the correct run permissions, and then:

./Take1

this will effectively launch it from your terminal.

@grandad, hey, glad you like it! I'd be curious to see the work you did there with your Seymour, if you can point to something I can download and play, I'd love to!

About playing on windows (either 10 or 11), sure I'll help, this should only require you to:

1. Download that large (127Mb) zip file;

2. Extract the whole contents in a directory (such as maybe: D:\Games\Take1);

3. Navigate to said D:\Games\Take1\ directory and run Take1.exe.

At this point the game should start fullscreen, you would see the loading screen and start hearing the music.

If this doesn't work, let me know what happens, any errors you get, anything to get some hint of what could be going wrong. :tup:

He's referring to his game "Dizzy goes to Hollywood".
It was made using the DizzyAGE engine.

@enthusiastguy No, I mean the actual link to the Google page.

Yeah, my bad, forgot to set public access for that particular link. It's clean now. Thanks for the heads-up!

Hey there!

Still something not quite over on this topic since the last published version was indeed a beta, this is a heads-up that I have seriously rubbed and refined the beta version to a shiny final version that will soon be released. It won't be any larger story-wise, but it will look and feel better.

I have also created a draft manual for it that it too will be released both in digital/printable versions and since I don't want to burden Adam needlessly with Google drive links, I will be making my releases on this self-hosted domain:

https://seymour.tape-drive.xyz

Right now there's really nothing there but draft work and a draft manual at which you can look at and even make suggestions, but in a week or so, I expect to finish cleaning it up and releasing the files there.

@Adam, I'd still be honored for you to keep hosting this and the sequel I'm working on, just taking the steps to also set-up a mirror in place. :teethy:

Won't guarantee that 99.9% uptime, but I am pretty sure I can guarantee a 95% the way I set things up.

Meantime, if you fancy a look at the manual, I'm ready to take some critique/blame, things that I always befriend as constructive feedback!

Peace out! ✌️

Alright, final steps I believe are done.

This short game moved from beta to normal release, fixed a ton of problems and even slightly changed the scenes.

You can find the updated downloadable distributions for win/mac/linux either as x64 or arm64 in the downloads section of:

https://seymour.tape-drive.xyz

Current version: 1.1.642. All are tested. What I have NOT tested is running the linux-arm64 on Raspberry Pi 4 or 5. It COULD work, but right now my Pi devices are in someone else's possesion and will take some time before testing that too. Given the low priority, not in a hurry.

Feel free to mirror, will try to migrate the game to SDL2 in the future to reduce the game's footprint as much as possible. Who knows, maybe I can merge a bit with the scripting language of Dizzy AGE since I'll probably rebuild everything anyway.

As far as this topic goes, this project is done!

However, it anyone finds any bugs worth fixing, let me know.
