Sorry to double-post, everyone. I know I'm (inadvertently) inflating my thread's post count so it's somewhat deceptive (there's not as much response to the game as you'd think looking at the number of replies!) but the next version of the game is up.

I fixed some textbox issues (size, quotation marks, clarity of one piece of exposition, stupid mix-up of Moogle's riddle), I added a "Danger" sign on the path to Redrum, and moved the deadliness so that you're not taken unawares any more, I raised up the lava in the Chasm of Despair (not so much a "chasm" any more...) so that no one thinks they should leap headfirst into said bottomless chasm... I also redrew a couple more scaled tiles so that there are hardly any left - and the few that are do not bother me any. (Oh, and I disabled the use of the MENU key to advance dialog - ACTION key only, now - because it did funny things right at the climax. Hope this doesn't ruin anyone's gameplay.)

If no one has any more immediate concerns with it (technically speaking, not preferentially) then I will consider this the first release version and submit it to DizzyAGE (though it will be the lousiest game on the site!) shortly. Anyone?

Congrats Humbert,

This is a really enjoyable game!! Dizzy & LOTR all in one game - what could be better? It even follows the story fairly well.
This is certainly on my list of '10 things to do before I die'.

Ive completed this game now - the last item/action isnt at all obvious if you dont know the story already tho.
When I finished I had lots of items that I never used and saw a few places that I hadnt explored/got into - is this ok?
for example, i dont know how to get on the cave below the pub or couldnt explore all the ledges/clouds in the Yellow trees bit.

I loved the visual joke with the red herring - anyone that does use this item deserves to lose a life

I hope that you expand this game as id love to be able to explore more of Middle Earth and to find a use for some of the unused items such as Boromirs Horn and the wizards hat. It would be interesting to find out what the thinking was behind the hot dog stand - im not sure Tolkien had one of those in mind when he penned his classic...

all in all good stuff - Im just surprised that noones come up with a LOTR Dizzy parody sooner - I hope it isnt too long before we see a Dizzy Star Wars game as that would certainly make my day also.

blimey how quick r u? i can't seem to get any further than solving the sword and the coin for firewood and woodcutters axe, got loads of items and can't find where to use them tried everything on everyone, can't work out moogle's rhym - breath and death, ghost; thirst drinking; alcoholic!! or even a ring [precious] oh and i did the red herring thing but you've got to try everything; wore the helmet thinking it would get me past the snowstorm - nope; anyway don't suppose you could give us a few clues please {yolkfolk}

I'm glad, at least, that the game wasn't quite as blindingly easy as some people have made it appear!

I don't know exactly what you mean about Moogle's riddle. You say you can't solve it, but you also say you tried the herring - which means you know what the answer is to the riddle. What you don't know, I presume, is what to do about it now?

I will say that you have a little more exploring to do before you find out the solution. If Moogle isn't playing by his word, then neither should you - there may be another way around it.

And you find traversing the Redpeak atop the Hazy Hills to be a little treacherous? I'd say that calls for another route to be found. If you can't go over, then perhaps...

I don't like being more specific (perhaps someone else will?) but I hope this is a bit of a nudge in the right direction.

Im a big LOTR fan, and read all the books, seen the movies, stage show, cartoons, parodies, bought the games, toys etc etc.
Thats why I probably completed this game so quickly and enjoyed the quirky jokes and puzzles so much. I thought it great that it parodies the Hobbit too with the trolls and gollums riddles

Annie & anyone else that gets stuck on this game:
I think your lives will never be complete until youve read the Hobbit or at least seen the movies.

Ive found my salvation in the Lord (...of the Rings...) and you can too.
Frodo Lives! Halleluyah!!!

Im sorry, I cant help myself
for those of you that have never read the Hobbit - if your finding Moogles riddle hard - try these, for the answers, you'll just have to read the book like a good Hobbit - or search google if your a lazy orc:

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.
{yolkfolk}

What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?
{yolkfolk}

No-legs lay on one-leg, two legs sat near on three legs, four legs got some.
{yolkfolk}

An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
'That eye is like to this eye'
Said the first eye,
'But in low place
Not in high place.'
{yolkfolk}

Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking
{yolkfolk}

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.
{yolkfolk}

Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.
{yolkfolk}

A box without hinges, key or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.
{yolkfolk}

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.
{yolkfolk}

What has it got in its pocketses?
{yolkfolk}

Gollum, Gollum.

thanks humbert that was just the nudge i needed, though still took me ages even when i got past gorlab, jumping up in trees and over clouds for hours before realising what to do about moogle, then of course back to the clouds. thankfully didn't have to resort to dizzyfanuk's suggestion of reading the hobbit again, though i did enjoy it first time. anyway loved the game look forward to you doing more!!! {yolkfolk} {yolkfolk} {yolkfolk}

I listened LOTR as audiobooks (I'm a slow reader) - took me a while last Christmas (or was it the one before). It was really great.

And what I really appreciated was that the movie isn't just a bad cut from the book, like most movies made after books are. It adds depth on characters (the love story of Aragorn and Arwen is not mentioned in the book like in the movie) and is very visual on the battles (which are not so impressive in the book).

But the books add a lot of details and background to the story. And they fill in some gaps. I was really surprised by the heroes singing skills. Aragorn was as famous for his songs as he was for his courage in battles. At first it looked kinda' silly (probably that's why it wasn't in the movies) but then you realize it makes perfectly sense. I mean they didn't have mp3 players back then, so the only way was to entertain themselves through the long journeys. And that's why these singing skill were so appreciated.

The reader in my audiobooks did a great job and I swear he did the Gollum exactly like the actor in the movie.

Great books and great movies - all a must!

you have to jump at *just* the right place to get over to his ledge. it's very tricky, but you don't need anything special to get over to it.

thanks for the help, although it still seems impossible

Stand just before the "lip" of the bridge, so that the crack is right between your feet. Then jump right. That's how I always do it anyway.

And ignore the underground well. As this game was me figuring out how to make a Dizzy game, there's lots of nonsense things thrown in that are either inaccessible (like the well) or unusable (most - though not all - of the objects you have named).

Although I like pixel-perfect jumping when creating a game, my future games are unlikely to require pixel-perfect jumping over deadly lava again.

Er, isn't there a save game? (There wasn't in the first release, but I'm sure I implemented it in the end...)

But, yeah. I learned my lesson!
