Let's see if anyone gets this right
Which of the following items are not required to complete the game?

I don't know, I thought they were all required!

Does the Apple go to the troll at the start?
The Bean grows the beanstalk.
Is the pigmy cow not given to the shopkeeper?
Been a while since I played it

The item that is no required to complete the game is the apple you need the bean to get to zacks castle and the cow to get the bean the aplle is optional you can either give it to the troll or not not a nessary

Depends which version really
If It's Spectrum or Amstrad, the answer is A and B.
Just water the manure and the beanstalk will grow without the bean.
But depending if you're a kind-hearted person, The overall answer would be A.

Yep, it was a trick question
The answer I was looking for was all of the above; you don't need to give the troll the apple, you can water the manure without the bean, and therefore not need to give the cow to the merchant. That doesn't apply to the Amiga/Atari ST/DOS remakes, though.

Yeah, I thought you had to give the troll the apple to make it go away so you could get a coin where he was standing later! Is that not true?

I'm pretty sure you just have to try to exit the mines to the right to make him leave the dungeon and appear there to block you. No apple required earlier.

Nah, I went back and confirmed this on Atari ST: The troll wouldn't appear in the mine until I gave the troll the apple, and the coin wouldn't appear until I visited the troll in the mine. Even hitting the fire button all around the troll's starting location failed to work until the coin actually appeared.
I think you could beat the game without the rope, though!
