OK thanks to the earlier hint and a google (ending up on youtube with one of those very scary old public safety films) I got past the oil fire... made huge progress and am now on the last diamond, which I can't find for love nor money!
I haven't used the hammer so I'm guessing that's it, but I'm sure I've tried doing what hammers normally do (ie smashing and bashing) on pretty much every wall, boulder and rock I can find...

Grrr..didnt realise had to jump on top to place the totem item, was actioning infront...no wonder came to a halt...now saved Dora, sorted out the princess and shopkeeper, just pogie left, Daisy & pirate I think. Cant find the remaining diamonds though.

Colin, ive just looked now, didnt realise, thanks for that. Ive got pogie in the cage now, not sure what to do with him but I wondering if indeed im at the point I have to have the 40 diamonds, so to work out which 3 im missing and find. However cant recall coming across a mirror, dunno if there are a few screens ive not come across yet where the last few are.
