Yolkfolk to the Rescue by Andy Mason of Dock Tower, 2009
============================================
The Story in Brief
=============
Grand Dizzy was out in the woods hiding his gold coins because he knows how much Dizzy likes finding them. In a remote spot he was captured by the evil wizard Zaks and locked in his hut. In order to get his release Zaks wants a mysterious object that is secured in the bank of the nearby town and it is up to Dizzy to get it for him. The object is in a safe within the bank and the safe requires a combination. To get pieces of the combination, tasks within the town must be carried out but Dizzy doesn't have the skills or knowledge to complete them all. Therefore he calls on some of his Yolkfolk friends to help him out.
The Basics
========
Walk your player around town where there are a number of tasks to be completed. As you complete them you will be given a piece of the safe combination. You start off playing as Dizzy but he doesn't have the neccessary skills to complete all the tasks so you will have to switch to a character that does.
Switching Characters & the Inventory
============================
By pressing enter you access the inventory dialog. If you select an inventory item it will be used or dropped depending on the situation. If you select a character one of two things could happen. If the selected character is on screen you will switch contol to that character. If they are not on screen then you are told where they are so you can find them and then change. The characters not in your control are always where you left them. This will not be the case in the next release as they will move somewhere else now and again.
Player Skills
=========
In a meeting before entering the town, Dizzy dished out jobs for each of the team. He decided that himself, Denzil & Dylan should stick to their skills. Daisy was given the job of feeding everybody as there were many energy zapping nasties about town. Therefore only Daisy can enter shops to gather what is there. Daisy has also been given the extra responsibility of entering the safe combination and is the only team member that will enter the bank.
The remaining Yolkfolk skills are:
Dizzy - plumbing & chemistry
Dylan - electrical & building
Denzil - mechanical
Feeding Time
==========
There are two foods types available which Daisy can take from the shops and leave somewhere for the other Yolkfolk. Food one is the favourite food of each team member and the second type is Cherry Buns. Anyone eating their favourite food will give a 100% energy boost but if they eat someone elses the will only get a third. Cherry Buns give a two third energy increase.
The favourite foods of the Yolkfolk are:
Dizzy : ham
Dylan : beans
Daisy : pear
Denzil : cheese burger
To clarify: If you are in need of energy and you are controlling Denzil. Then eating the cheese burger will give you the maximum boost. If you eat someone elses favourite food then you only get a third. You've been warned.
Controls
======
Keys are Z/LEFT, X/RIGHT, K/UP, M/DOWN for movement, SPACE for jump,
ENTER for action and ESCAPE/Q for menu.
If present, a gamepad or a joystick can also be used.
You can mute the sound with F9,
toggle windowed/full screen mode with F10,
and show the game FPS with F11.
F1 will display the About box (windowed only).
Use PrintScreen or ctrl+PrintScreen to save a screenshot.
Requirements
==========

Congratulations for finishing the game in time!
It's now downloadable from DizzyAGE:
http://www.yolkfolk.com/dizzyage/games.html
When you fix eventual bugs or do improved versions (with the rest of the features you planned), let me know and I'll upload them for all to play.
Sorry for not being able to give you more feedback so far. I didn't get to play it properly yet - this means I still have some fun ahead! I'll be back with details as soon as I finish it.
The game is now available on Yolkfolk :)

Im now about to click play.
How on earth the games got 'votes' already i don't know.. .lol no ones completed it yet?? that would have been fast.
i've only completed two of them so far (apart from mine), but i've played enough of the others (apart from Andys) to have a pretty good idea how much i like them.
But games do get better can't really judge them after getting half way though.
Im not sure what im meant to be doing on this... or what the 'tasks' are.
One thing i really don't like when i drop items they get lost in the back ground
no i'm further than halfway through the two i haven't completed yet. I reckon i'm probably pretty close to the end of them. And i will be trying to complete them before voting on them.
i'm going back to playing YTTR now, but not before getting some sausages cooked :v2_dizzy_happy:

I cooked sausages this evening too. And I managed to burn two of my fingers while moving a pan that have been too close to the fire :v2_dizzy_cry: So take care! Now I keep a cold beer can in my hand all the time. I wonder if I should take it to work with me. :v2_dizzy_cheers:

But anyway - maybe we should continue this conversation on a separate thread -
dont want to disrespect Andys very good game by talk of processed meat products.
Altho - there are some tasty morsels to be had in this game - i saw some burgers, but no sausages...hmmm?
Great stuff Andy, shame you didnt get time to add the extras you mentioned - but the moving dangers really add to this.
Well done :v2_dizzy_clapping:

But games do get better can't really judge them after getting half way though.
If that were the case, I couldn't vote for any of the games, as I have completed only a handful of video games in my entire life.
In fact, I do think I will have to forgo voting on Illusion Island Dizzy as, after many hours of play, I've still only gotten past the bees and the bear. I can't figure anything out in that game at all! I'm certain it's excellent, but I haven't experienced enough of it to rate fairly.
I realize I'm contributing to the derailing of this thread, but I've been very busy this week and haven't had a chance to play "Yolkfolk" or "Knightmare" yet. :O
i've posted help for you in the IID help thread...
really enjoying this game macon:v2_dizzy_clapping:
meph is right though! you have to be careful where you drop items or you could lose them in the background. I had to put a black line around each item in SBD.
I'm up to 6 parts of the combination
stuck on >fixing broken pipe, cash for mailing stamped package
If that were the case, I couldn't vote for any of the games, as I have completed only a handful of video games in my entire life. :O
No but what im saying is.. this game had votes within hours of being released.. i dint believe anyone would have gotten fair enough to get a full opinion of it, its not a case of completing it, those people that voted within hours might be willing to vote much higher as they progress and unlock new things. its not important i know i was just making an obervationation... especially when you have a couple of months to sink your teeth into it and give it a good run.
I submitted the game before going to bed and when I got up next morning I was suprised to see it had 2 votes already. But it does say on the voting page that people can change their vote so I would imagine that anyone who voted feels they were a bit hasty can vote again.

Yeah, votes can be changed any time. Just vote again and the old vote is replaced.

This votes thing is interesting -
does that mean that there are Dizzyage fans out there who are like harry potter fans - in that as soon as as a new release comes out they complete it within hours?
Unless the votes are by people who have had access to the games beforehand - but i dont think there were more than a couple of testers per game - i know i've beta tested most of the games and still havent decided which way to vote yet.
Or maybe each developer has a secret fanclub that are voting for them regardless of the game?
Either way - its looking like a very close race indeed.

i think you have a couple of good points there. I do believe there are a lot of fans that don't necessarily use the forums. And certainly SLIDER seems to be able to whizz through games quickly. I still remember him completing MSD with maximum score in half an hour!
Guys, if you want to talk about the voting system, post about it on the Easter Competiton thread. :p
macon I found a bug. if i try to use the first letter 'o' on the safe. I get a message's error
Finished it!! Well done macon! fantastic game!:v2_dizzy_clapping:
was kinda stumped there, till i found i was missing a combination letter! I was trying each letter in turn and found that bug!
Thanks for finding that Colin.
A typo was causing an illegal peice of text being sent to my custom speech dialog routine causing the error.
It has been fixed in the currently available downloads.
Saved games will still work.

The fixed version is on DizzyAGE.
Starting to get the hang of this now.. but i keep getting lost around the map and losing my items.. lol
But i have 4 letters (C B I I)
currently trying to sort the Docks out and get some gas for the burner.
This losing of items I find strange as they show ok on both this computer and my laptop. Perhaps I should add a black border round them.
Maybe I have my monitor settings darker or lighter than the average user!
it happens, for example, if you put a yellow item down in front of yellow fencing/building. it means that athough if you look carefully you can see it, it will be very well blended in and not very visible at all.
Thank you very much to the member that scored this 1 point last night. It really boosts my motivation to create more games.
Is the game so bad or did you just not like it? If it was a case of not liking it did you have to be so horrible. I spent over 3 months creating it. If the game is terrible then fair enough.
I was going to spend today sorting the colour clashing with the background issue but I don't have will to do it now.
I don't actually like the idea of being able to see how the scoring is going. I think it should stay hidden until the end. If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't be feeling so pissed of now. Also I feel it encourages strategic voting late on as it stands now.

I agree with Macon, im not sure what the merit is in seeing the scores before the comp ends?
I think Andys game is worth much more than 1/10 - i actually thought the variety of games this year was so great that the comp would be much closer than it is.
Also, why do some games have more votes than others? would it be better if each voter had to give a score for every game, not just the one that they like best?
Sorry to post off topic, could we set up a discussion forum to talk about this?
i think if people realised how much went into making games, or tried to do it themselves, then they wouldn't vote any game that lowly.
i do think that people should at least attempt to qualify their votes in the Competition thread, even if they don't say what points they gave each game.

...

1 point is really a joke. A bad joke. I don't think I ever saw a game to worth only 1 out of 10. Any game. Ever. Especially in such a similar games competition. Could've been a mistake and he/she might change it later. Doesn't really matter.
Don't worry about it. I didn't finish "Yolkfolk to the Rescue" yet, but I very much enjoyed your entry last year. And I really mean it.
Don't have second thoughts about improving it. You're not doing it to win the competition. And you're not doing it to receive a better score from the one who voted 1 point. You're doing it for the rest of the people who enjoyed your game and for those who will enjoy it in the future. And of course you're doing it for you, to have a better game made.
As you said you spent a lot of hard work on it so if you feel like something needs to be fixed or improved, just do it. People will appreciate it even if they rarely tell you.
Alex
Just a quick question.. can items be use more than once?
I picked up loads of letters..currently trying to find some gas and fix the Docks.. as for the gas i did try the tin of beans. LOL but Dasiy just ate them.
Other then getting lost in the map I'm making some progress.

Meph,
you'll find a use for the letters eventually - but i'd focus on the other puzzles
Remember, this game is set in a town where things are broken and the yolkfolk have been tasked to sort them out.
So theres an electricity pylon thats broken, the water in the fountains stopped, the gas in the sewers leaked etc, etc.
The fun bit is working out which yolkfolk has the skills to fix which thing and then getting the right tools to do the job - this is an absolute dream game if youre in the building trade!!

good job i drive for a builders merchant then! lol!!:v2_dizzy_happy:
to give this game 1/10 is a crime and extremly disrespectful! Macon, you deserve so much more than that! As a game maker, I can see how much work has gone into this game!
I know, :v2_dizzy_tongue2:
I have 6 letters and used one.
Fixed the pylon, fountain, library, gas pipe, the wall, flat battery, zoo, shopping basket.
the post, Docks and Lab our on my list.. i half done the lab.

I thought it was really clever how the solution to the letters puzzle was stated all along - you just have to think a little cryptically...
:v2_dizzy_confused2:
:v2_dizzy_yahoo: Dizzy saved the day again with alittle help from his friends. I'll look forward to playing an updated version if you get round it it with the proper intro and end.
Certainly got a bit dizzy getting lost in the map but i enjoyed it, once you get to grips with the game play and nature of the puzzles its pretty good. I like having to use more than one object to fix something, the Different yolkfolk with different skills was great, i don't think the scrolling made a huge difference to the gameplay but appears it could be a popular addition to future games. I guess the tricky bit was find out what needed fixing.. and with common sense the puzzles can be easily solved. though i got stuck in the Docks for a while probably the leasts logical one. :D
Great stuff.

I've just completed the game- great work! :D It must have taken you ages to program the puzzles, but in my opinion it was worth it.
Please do add the intro and outro later if you want to, it's a game I would happily play through again in the future.
Also- I want to say how much I appreciate your hard work in converting these old Spectrum adventure games into DizzyAGE. It's something no-one else has done (with non-Dizzy games), and I've really enjoyed playing them.
I remember playing 'Megabucks' at my friend's house when I was a kid (although we never got very far :)), and it's great to be able to play it as 'Dizzy's Dream Home' now.
I'd never played 'Everyone's a Wally' before though- it's a really nice piece of Speccy adventuring, and made me curious to check out the others in the series- 'Pyjamarama' and 'Three Days in Paradise' look interesting.
Also, has anyone ever played 'Slightly Magic'? That's a great Codemasters game, very Dizzy-like.
Anyway- don't let a couple of bad scores get you down- I for one am very grateful for the time you put into these remakes, and I'll be sure to remember that when I vote :v2_dizzy_clapping:

whoever gave this game just 1/10 obviously doesn't appreciate what goes into making a game and how good this game is and how lucky we are to have this community - i just finished it today and thought it was great - all the games this year are so good and have their own special qualities some of which we've never had before and i should think most of us will have a bit of a tough time choosing a winner - keep up the good work macon and don't let one silly score get to you :v2_dizzy_clapping::v2_dizzy_clapping::v2_dizzy_cl apping:
Updated to version 1.02.
This update makes changes to the in game objects that tend to get lost in the background. The objects have a black outline drawn around them and/or have changed colour. They have not been changed in the hud as this will be done in the coming major update.
Save games should still be compatible.

You will be given a warning if you ignore my message.

Version 1.02 bug.
I have all 11 letters. I've tried to use the letter T at first and an error message occured:

There is a bug if you use the letter T out of sequence. It is fixed for the forthcoming 1.1 release. As well as the bug fix there is a graphical inventory, non playing characters can move into other game locations and other cosmetic changes.
I still have to do an intro and outro but because of this bug I will release the new version before then. The intro and ending can be version in 1.2.

Yolkfolk to the Rescue v 1.1.
As there are changes to the map, save games from versions 1.0, 1.01 and 1.02 will no longer work. Sorry about this.
I am actually releasing this earlier than I would have liked as there are still a couple of things to do. But as a couple of people have reported a fatal bug with the letter 'T' I thought I would release my latest stable work in progress. There are some new features as well as the bug fix.
What's New
========
Fixed letter 'T' bug.
Fixed dropping item in a neverending room bug.
Graphical inventory similar to 'Dizzys Dream Home'.
The book in the classroom is more difficult to get.
Yolkfolk move to different locations within the town at certain milestones in the game.

=======
Intro and ending. I wanted to complete them for this release but as mentioned earlier a fatal bug meant releasing this early.
A Word About The Yolkfolk Changing Locations
==============================
Some players have asked me why you need to be in the same room as a character to be able to switch to it. This is because in the game that this is based upon, 'Everyone's a Wally', it used to switch characters in the same way. The difference being is that the characters used to walk about on their own and if you needed to switch then you would have to go find them. Because the characters moved you could never reach them by following them instead you had to cut them off. Hence the circular map with shortcuts. Another feature was that the characters could pickup and drop objects if they so desired. I thought the whole thing looked cool and I wanted to re-create it in my game. So I kept the circular map even though it was confusing until you got the hang of it and coded the character find and switch routines. The AI of the characters which i nicknamed 'free will' I decided to leave until the core of the game was done
However it soon became clear that free will would be a big mistake in its current form. To be able to make the game I had to play the original in great detail and watch a recording of the game serveral times. It soon became clear what a pain in the arse having AI was. For example say your player had the screwdriver and it was of no use to you but the electrician still had a use so you drop it in a convenient place for the electrician. You then find the electrician and switch to him which is straightforward with the circular map. Next off you go to get the screwdriver thats been left for you only to find some blighter has nicked it and there is a bloody can of beans in its place.
So off you go to find whose taken it by finding each character in turn. If you're lucky you'll get the screwdriver back but chances are the thief has dropped it somewhere and a search of each location ensues. Still can't find it? That's because someones probably picked it up again. It goes on an on like this everytime you need an object. i got so frustrated in researching the original game that I thought it best that I spare the players of my game a similar fate. 'Free will' was dropped but the code for finding a character remained so maybe I could do something with it at a future date.
Now is that future date and what i have done is at certain points in the game the yolkfolk appear in different locations to give the impression they have a mind of their own. Does it add to the game? Only time will tell. If it doesn't then I'll just chalk it down to experience.I would like to incorperate 'free will' into one of my future projects if I can make it playable. I'll have to think about it.
Anyhow, for those that asked why you could only switch characters when they are in the same room. There is the answer. It's a bit long winded which is why I kept putting off answering before.

Wow... After being absent for some time, it's great reading up on the new releases people have put out. I can't tell you how good it feels to come back here and see the community still running stronger than ever, creating games of such incredible quality. The screenshots and indeed the whole idea of this game sounds amazing, I can't wait to try it.... There's just so much to catch up on! I'm only sorry I missed the chance to play them all during the competition.
Version 1.2 is now released.
Unless there are any bugs to be fixed, this game is finally finished. Please note save games from previous releases will not work. Sorry about this.
The game now has a proper ending. It is a bit lengthy but I wanted to set it up nicely for a future sequel. It won't be my next game though as I am going to start work on 'Dream Home 2' (I don't have a name for it yet).
A screenie.
http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq282/masonandy/yolkend.jpg
Those of you that have completed the game might not want to play through it again just to see how it ends. So I have supplied a save game which can be downloaded below. The save takes the player to just before the end of the game. Just exit the screen to the right. I don't want new players to be able to cheat so I will make the save only available for a short time. To use the save just put it in the game folder and it will appear in save slot 1. Please note the save will only work with the latest release of the game (1.2)
Download save game here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dtgames/files/save1.rar)
very good! :v2_dizzy_clapping:
however i do have just one question.
what the heck is a .rar file, and how do i convert it to something my computer will actually recognise (i.e. a zip file)?
Cool I'll probably play the whole game again and see all the other little bits and bods that were fixed or changed.
The games pretty good once you get into it and used to the format i liked it.
.rar files are for a program called WinRAR, It's kinda similar to Winzip.
Anyway, v1.2 is uploaded onto Yolkfolk (in a zip file of course ;)) :)
http://www.yolkfolk.com/site/games.php?game_id=177
I've prepared WinRAR to WinZIP for a long time but as WinZIP didn't support the format I never used it for files on the internet. But I understand the later versions of WinZIP now support rar files so I've stared using it.

Congratulations for the ending! A really nice one!
And thanks for the saved game ;)
Here are a few things I spotted:
1. at zaks' lab there are some dark blue brushes visible where the box is. I suppose you missed them and probably some lcd monitors don't show them well enough.
2. in the forest, where dizzy looses colours, I think there's another dizzy behind it - his hands remain visible and up.
3. the instant exit from game looks like a crash. I recommend an ending dialog or just restart it in the main menu. If not, some people may think the game crashed and they didn't see all the outro. I did replay with log on.
4. there is some output in the log (a list of numbers) - it's best to remove the debug println commands from code
I also uploaded the v1.2 on DizzyAGE.
