Hi there folks!

Moving discussion of "Starship Dizzy" (including bugs and other issues!) to its own thread to leave my "progress" thread for discussion and information about other games I might make in the future.

Because "Starship Dizzy" is NOW DOWNLOADABLE (http://www.yolkfolk.com/dizzyage/dz029.html)!!!

Yes, it's done, the first Easter Compo 2009 game to be completed (which probably doesn't speak very highly of it!) and boy am I glad I can stop fussing over it. It's done and dusted.

At least until the first person finds a new bug and I start all over again...

:D

Hope everyone can find something to enjoy here!

Peace,
Hum.

Well... I'll make the first reply...

If you downloaded the game file today, you'll need to change the music volume to 100% in the game menu. It defaults to 0%, unfortunately, because I last played the game this way and uploaded this version. Sorry about the inconvenience folks!

Why does the first reply in the thread have to be me spotting a mistake?

It's now up on Yolkfolk :)

http://www.yolkfolk.com/site/games.php?game_id=179

I shouldn't worry about the volume settings, I changed that on setup when I extracted the game onto my laptop and re-zipped the game, ready to be on Yolkfolk :) It should've worked.
The download works and the screenshots (With my crazy captions underneath ;)) are now up.

As for the game, well....I am truly amazed m8 :v2_dizzy_clapping: I spent most of this morning browsing through the game to see where I can go, I'll have a proper play later on.

Good job, Humbert :)

Thanks, Adz M, for the kind words and the Yolkfolk upload!

('Starship Easterprize' - not one of the names I'd come up with myself but it's better than any of mine! Well done! I did decide in the end to go with something less strictly derived from 'Enterprise', though.)

I still feel like such a dolt - at the last hurdle to make such a stupid error as a volume setting! (I didn't realize that when I changed the game volume while playing that it altered the .INI file accordingly. If you check my other thread, I even predicted that there would be an .INI file error!) My main concern is people playing the game and thinking, "This is stupid, there's no music," and never finding that it is merely accidentally switched off!

I'm so glad you liked the look and feel of the game, anyway. Hope the actual gameplay isn't a disappointment!

I've played this for a bit and it looks fantastic. :dizzy_cool:

Also I solved a puzzle. YAY :O

I've uploaded it with both fx and music volumes to 100 by default.
I noted the game as "medium" length. If you consider it to be "large", let me know and I can adjust it.

Humbert
31-03-09, 05:43 PM
Thanks a bundle, Alex! I can stop worrying now.

(Until the next bug is found...)

And "medium" is perfectly fine. The map possibly borders on being "large"(-ish), but as far as the size impacts on gameplay I would say "medium" is a perfectly adequate description.

And thanks, new member jamatthews! Hope you enjoy the game - and enjoy Yolkfolk.com even more!

Great game really enjoying it, sound effects are cool.
took a while to get use to the set up (flying to the different planets and save points) quite difficult in parts too, and a nice intro!

I've found one scroll so far!!
but the other planets are causing some problem.

also I'm not sure if i found some bugs.. but theres a spider and a rat that don't move during the time travel mission.. dunno if they are meant to move or not?

Humbert
31-03-09, 08:19 PM
They're not meant to move.

I recognize now that I shouldn't use static baddies, as everyone that has touched this game has reported this as a 'bug'. It was completely on purpose - using the creatures more as decoration than anything else - but as it throws people off I can see that it is a mistake.

Still, next time eh?

Glad you're enjoying the game, though!

This is very addictive, I'm up to 4 pages now.

I didn't think the static enemies were a bug, I thought they were some kind of puzzle so whenever I got stuck I went back to them to use all my items.

think i got 3 pages...
the ice caves and the one hanging from the balloon left.

I like those snowmen.

This game is good:v2_dizzy_cool:
But is hard
But where is G.Dizzy Danny and Daisy???

Congratulations on a fantastic game Humbert! :v2_dizzy_clapping:
I've only had a short go on it, as i'm on a tight deadline to get mine finished!

but I really like what i've seen!
well done! :v2_dizzy_happy:

Thanks again, folks!

And quiggie, if you need an ignitor then the empty bottles have surely already served their purpose?

And... one of those other items may not be, strictly speaking, needed. Um, at all. The uses of the other two will be (trust me!) immediately apparent as soon as they are necessary.

But where is G.Dizzy Danny and Daisy???

Hope it's not too hard! :v2_dizzy_happy: I thought some of it might be tricky, but most people seem to find it rather too easy (for my liking).

And yeah, Daisy and Grand Dizzy just never found a place in this game, I'm afraid. (Was Danny ever in anything except that Crash cover game?)

yes. he made a belated appearance in RRD.

in a tomb.

i always stick poor Danny in my games.. another character to fool around.
I thought Daisy made a cameo in the hospital, and Grand dizzy was kinda the chap with the beard.. lol.

Yeah i did finish it, i wont say anything in case i spoil it for others,
But you could do a sequel at a later date.. never know what might happen during his finale flight.. you know, It was a nice game concept.

I thought Daisy made a cameo in the hospital.

Oops - you're right! Forgot about that!

(Grand Dizzy wasn't one of the hobos, though.)

Meph

no.. but didn't Grand Dizzy have a beard and wanted to escape the Zaklons?
Looks like him.

Well so far I have 2 pages, one from Eternia IV and the other from Xylar IX.

And the items I have are a needle, a saucepan, unloaded gun, wooden key, stone slab, Crystal-gro, safety hammer and wire cutters. The Laser shield and Ice boots I already know what they're used for :)

Finished this earlier today... Have to say congratulations on such a 'cracking' game. The multiple-worlds format was a fairly ingenious variation on the standard gameplay and the graphics, design and animations were all very inventive and huge fun to discover and explore. 'Roll' on the future!

Humbert
05-04-09, 06:37 PM
perhaps i'm just not used to travelling such long distances - anyway still can't find the crowbar

Trust me - you don't have to go that far! :v2_dizzy_wink2:

And ClientFan, thanks so much for the kind words!

I've only just started this game and think it's great. Love the little touches, there's no need for a Turbo Lift but it just adds to the fun.

PS Surely a spider, whether moving or not, is always considered a bug?

JonnyJP

How did you create the music?

Humbert

Thanks JohnnyP!

:dizzy_cool:

How did you create the music?

I didn't, I'm afraid. (Wish I did!)

Alex has for download a bunch of music from various Speccy games in the YM format that DizzyAGE uses. I just selected a few appropriate ones from those.

I was gonna use an MP3 (converted to OGG) of some cool Z80 music I found online, but it wasn't worth tripling(!) the game's file size for that...

Not that you are ever going to do this, but if you drop the Ice Boots on the Crystal behind the Snow Queen, you generate the following error:

UNKNOWNFUNC, 379,0, "doDropObject
Data\Scripts\game.gs:1100
UseObject_311:1100 < UseObject:185 < ActionObject:259 < Action:24 < .

Just thought I would let you know. Great game BTW just finished it (after accidentally dropping the iceboots lol).

Humbert
07-04-09, 11:44 AM
Knew I'd end up with another one of those! Thanks! :v2_dizzy_blush:

(It's a missed capital letter that's causing it...)

Glad you enjoyed the game despite this! :v2_dizzy_happy:

ETA:

Oh, BTW, Alex has uploaded the fixed version to the DizzyAGE site. For now, if you're downloading the game for the first time please use that site rather than the main Yolkfolk one. (I'm sure Adz. M will put the revised version up on Yolkfolk soon enough, though.)

...and here's my feedback.

I very much enjoyed the game. The atmosphere was great. One of the great things was having multiple planets, so if you got stuck in one location, you could always go elsewhere. Sometimes I find Dizzy to become linear and if you get stuck on a puzzle that's it, not so with this game.

There were a couple of "jumps of death" which is never a good thing. Dizzy is often about exploration, jumping off that platform to see if you can land on a cloud. The treehouse / hammock near Fowl Falls is an example of this. Jumps of death tend discourage exploration and detract from the fun.

In a few places there were some awkward jumps. The one in the car (where you are trying to get to the back seat) stands out as does one in Rokhard where multiple items can be found.

Grand Dizzy could have been added somewhere in the game as "Bones" - a mechanism for you to dispense tips. Diz shows him an item, Grand-Dizzy / Bones, gives him a tip. The three tips I'd advise are:

Occasionally you may need an item from another planet to continue your quest.

Some kind of clue about revisiting the Ice Queen.

"Empty bottles aren't much good to anyone, Diz. Perhaps you should ask why they are there in the first place."

If this comes out as negative, it isn't meant to be. I really enjoyed the game and will be recommending it to a couple of Trekkie friends of mine.

Now that I've started posting on the forums, I wanted to take the time to say how much I've enjoyed all the Easter competition entries this year. :)

I really liked Starship Dizzy; as others above have said, the non-linear setup of the different planets was a great idea. The attention to detail of the backgrounds and Dizzy himself was fantastic! Good puzzles too, and good giant chickens :D

I've also got one of my mates interested in DizzyAGE, and he agrees with me- this was a great game :)
