DizzyAGE Easter Competition 2012 has officially started!
http://www.yolkfolk.com/dizzyage/competition/competition_on.gif
As usual, you've got until May 1st to come up with the most wonderful Dizzy adventure ever! That will be tough ;)
As a difference from last year I decided to allow more entries per developer again. This way people with more games can see how their creations are appreciated. So we'll probably have a few more games registered. Let's hope we'll have more prices too.
Please spread the word around and maybe we'll see some new developers too.
Any other suggestions are appreciated.
Good luck to everyone!
Alex
P.S.
Please announce your entries in this thread too.
Just to let everyone know there will not be an entry from me this year. No 'Silence of The Storm', no surprises, no entry at all.
Sorry if I disappoint anyone with that, but I didn't want any speculation after last years last-minute entry.
I hope others enter with lots of games though! :)

We were unexpectedly treated last year with your superlative entry & you've made the most games of anyone also so hopefully no one will be disappointed. I still find the day/night innovation highly impressive, particularly as linked to actual real time :)
My Enlightening Times Dizzy will fill in & see amongst others, hope everyone is really enjoying as I have my fingers crossed with this one as I feel is my best entry. Alex i've sent notification to enter :v2_dizzy_happy:
Lastly I will say how much time goes into making these games, I put so much into this one, I know you can do things generally a lot quicker with your deep knowledge but still we have to recognise the work & time that goes into them so perhaps a rest is deserved. I know i'm having one now :say_yes:

My entry this year is called 'When Dizzy Met Daisy' and with luck will cement my reputation of coming last in this competition for the third year running. I hope to have it finished by the end of February, but it's taking me longer than usual as the game can be played in two different versions.
For you sensitive souls there is the 'family friendly' version where Dizzy and Daisy are nice people who do nothing bad or illegal. Yes, you do play both characters and in this version even the Pope would give it his blessing.
For the rest of you there is the 'adult' version, where hopefully I will offend everybody at least once and possibly make you smile a bit too. Some of the puzzles are different or solved by a different method. Some puzzles have more than one way of being solved.
But worst of all, the game is set in 1972 and Dizzy has a large moustache.
^ :v2_dizzy_lol:
"Dizzy has a large moustache" that's first prize already.. i'm sold.
Im going to enter my "The Evil Wizard Zaks" game if it's completed.. i've reach development hell so it's on hold.
Quite a catchy title if i do say so myself.

Moustach'ed Dizzy....reveloutionary. I'll be sure to play the rude version:shocked:
On the subject of rude versions....I am hoping that my entry (loosely termed and if I manage to get it completed), will not offend anybody. It has a couple of references to subjects that are, for want of a better word 'Taboo'.
Difficulties at present lie in the completion of my storyline...for I cannot lie, my storyline is a little sketchy to say the least, but it definately had some promise when I started it!!!
As will become apparent whilst playing (if you can be bothered), the more progress that is made, the better the coding skills become, the better the interaction is (with the exception of close on toward the end, as I am finding it difficult to create a puzzle that is both clever and using the 'little extra' that people would want to see).
Oh well....my fingers are crossed for completion toward the end of March...got to learn how to change the loading screen and the HUD yet!!!!?
PS. Hey Meth, looking forward to riding that Ghost Train so don't let us down eh???? and Lord...can't wait to properly mess round with Enlightening Times, like you said earlier....once your own game is complete, rest is well deserved (in other words i can enjoy others work:-))

part of my tutorial game shows you how to do those. :)

Hey this should be fun, like the idea lol....I don't know how to do different versions where you can select either to play, I know Jamie did that in ETD or how to switch characters. Wonder what naughty things Dizzy got up to :D
1972 seems a little early..but then how old are Dizzy & Daisy suppose to be around ? Seems it's taken them decades to get Junior in the being lol (that can't be in the 'adult' version) :v2_dizzy_biggrin:
i think Dizzy & Daisy would have to fertilise a chicken.

There's probably a 'proper' way to set different versions, but all I did was set up two objects for Dizzy to choose from and if he chose the 'adult' one then set another object with a status of 1 and used that object's status as an 'if' check at the start of each relevant action or collision. Colin Page has detailed how to set up 'switching characters' somewhere in the 'coding queries' thread. The hard part has been setting up puzzles that need both characters to complete them.
I chose 1972 so that I could have fun with the social attitudes of the times as in those days men were men and a woman's place was in the kitchen, but I've tried to be equally mickey taking of both sexes in the adult version.
Saleh, nothing wrong with using alleged taboo subjects, although from Jamie's comment you should assume that incest is not a game the whole family can play (sorry, couldn't resist that). Nor do you need a 'super puzzle' for the end part, just tidying up loose ends. If people have enjoyed the game play they'll still give a satisfied sigh when the closing credits come up.
Meph, get off your butt and get that jetpack to work. I really enjoyed Grimm Dizzy so looking forward to the Evil Wizard Zaks as it is such a catchy title.
Finally, once my game is up and running I'll start on Enlightening Times and give that a good playing.

@ Grandad - thanks, a game of yours where there isnt a 'quickly gloss over it' section when my son is playing it :D

meh, it's as good a way as any.
Iron Tower Dizzy will be entered this year.
I'm also going to contribute to the prize pot.

I will be entering Yolkfolk prophecies in this years competition :-)
And is now fully completed (and, I think fully tested!!!)
xelanoimis
11-04-12, 08:08 PM
Yolkfolk prophecies is up and listed on the comp page.
I'll wait for the others when ready so I can proper list them.
We have a problem with the voting system. Not sure who's in charge with the forums now, but Peter helped me last time. The thing is that the login code (with the forum accounts) doesn't work anymore from the comp page. I copied it to allow voting, just for test:
http://www.yolkfolk.com/dizzyage/competition_test.php
So, if anyone can have a look at it and come up with a solution, it would be really great.
Thanks!
Alex
[EDIT: voting fixed, thanks to Peter]

Also "Enlightening Times Dizzy" got updated to v1.03
I think at least one other game will be in (Meph's "Evil Wizard Zaks") and who knows, maybe some surprize(s)?
Yeah, Zaks will be entered.
Just got to fix some bugs found during testing.
Aargh aargh aargh panic panic gotta finish it in five days panic.
I mean...
I am confident Iron Tower Dizzy will be ready in time.

Meph's game is up on DizzyAGE, so I guess it's only Queex left.
Queex, don't worry too much for the deadline, I can upload it tomorrow if you must work the night :) I'll probably be away at 12am (going to see Wrath of Titans at imax).
I'll leave the prizes list open till the end of voting. Unfortunately I didn't get to advertise much, as I did a few years back, but I'm glad we all have interesting games to play during Easter :)
Alex
Alex, Queex has done it, and it's up on yolkfolk.com....
Dunno about you, but easter was weeks ago.. ;)
I still have an easter egg, so it doesn't bother me! :P

Queex's game is up on DizzyAGE an in the competition. Sorry for the delay. It's always best to email me because I check the email almost daily.
So, congratulations to all the participants and good luck!
I hope the voting system works well for everyone. Let me know if it doesn't.
As for Easter it's been like 2 weeks and we still find spots of color on stuff from since we painted eggs and did a bit of experiments in the family, with eggs, fluid colors, stickers, milk, oil and other mixed ingredients - but it was fun :D
[EDIT]
I fixed an issue with the voting page - you should now be able to log in and vote.
Ah, i was hoping Spellbound would have been ready.
I don't know how long It's been like that, but I've just found that all the scores have been reset to zero, I just had to login and re-do my votes.
Also, the visitor counter is missing on the DizzyAGE site, and so are the left and right borders.

Expect a Autumn/Winter release of spellbound this year.
There are a few more puzzles to code and a whole load of beta testing to do.
Also, the visitor counter is missing on the DizzyAGE site, and so are the left and right borders.
When viewed in safari the left and right borders are always missing

Adz,
I do recall this happening before on one of the years as well. Hope it will work ok from herein for everyone as it doesn't aid keeping the votes in tally if it goes wrong. Well done in spotting & highlighting.
The Games download totals have all disappeared as well on dizzyage.
It tends to break every couple of months or so. The game download numbers disappear and Alex has to restore them from a backup. It's because they're stored using a very simple and unsecure method. I guess the game scored are stored the same way.
do we have to vote all over again

do we have to vote all over again
It looks like that's the case yes subject to any backup.
xelanoimis
22-05-12, 08:14 PM
Sorry for the inconvenience :(
Downloads and scores are stored in a file and accessed from php. I assume it can break if 2 people write it in the same time somehow. I do some backup from time to time and when it breaks I overwrite it manually.
About the votes I suppose the file was cut (usually the downloads gets zero sized) since it seems only 4 people voted. Anyway the system allows you to update your vote.
Apologies again, and I'll try to back it up more often and hopefully next time I'll set up a mysql database to work as it should.

OK,
I've added a safety check - not sure if this was the case but theoretically it was an issue.
So if you ever see the message:
"vote data base is busy, please try again!"
that was the case. Go back and try again
Also for the downloads:
"clickcnt data base is busy, please try again!"
And this nasty one that will need my manual assistence:
"clickcnt data base is broken, please try again later!"
I also get notified by email if it happens.
Please let me know if there are any problems coming with these changes.

With a week to go till the competition ends thought I'd have a look at the voting and noticed that the number of 'voters' is well down on last year as Jamie won with 245 points and my 'bottom' got 166 points, yet this year everybody is still under 100 points. What's more surprising is that my 'throwaway' game 'A Nice Cup Of Tea' which was supposed to guarantee me bottom place is currently joint second with 'Iron Tower Dizzy'.
I can only hope that there will be a surge of voting for 'The Evil Wizard Zaks' which will then put 'When Dizzy met Daisy' in bottom place and keep my reputation intact.

I think the first surge of votes that were initially input unfortunately got wiped, therefore voters that did not realise this had happened have not yet re-input their votes causing what looks like a poor show on the voting stage!!!
At present, the positioning certainly does not reflect true when looking at the gameplay of your 'When Dizzy met Daisy'!!!!

Why? 1 place Enlightening Times Dizzy - game very beautiful also is made in style of a Spectrum.
2 place Iron Tower Dizzy - original idea, plus good graphics.
Other games obviously worse.

Why thanks...I love your honesty:neutral:
SALEHMARLEY - The scenario of your game wasn't pleasant.
When Dizzy Met Daisy & A Nice Cup Of Tea - good scenario, but graphics bad.
The Evil Wizard Zaks - the first menu doesn't work, the name of the author in a frame is spoiled. The game scenario too wasn't pleasant.
Version 1.01:

From computer illiteracy to my first game in a year......!!!?
Once again...thanks for the constructive criticism, your humour and intelligence surpasses me:neutral::neutral:
I didn't know the menu didn't work, if people don't tell me i can't fix it.
And i can't do anything about the dodgy graphic i don't have the corrent programs for that kind of thing, either way that is a bit trival.
I noticed the different the votes are prior to the crash, Before the reset Iron Tower is flying in front and Cup ot tea was dragging behind. Maybe people voted differently after the crash or they haven't came back?
Oh well, Only fitting Zaks the evil bugger fails :D
Gonna use him again.
Meph, personal messages are overflowed. I write here.
Hold the normal version for a site. The menu, water, a bird, a frame are corrected. Game without the password.
http://rghost.ru/38869710
Downloadings of 0 times. The corrected version of game is necessary to nobody? I can clean the reference.
I downloaded that version and i can't get it to work.
Both version was passworded.
I don't see what was wrong with the bird or the water, they're just the standard graphics.
Not sure what was wrong with the menu, odd.
Doesn't work? Everything perfectly works for me.
Bat, bird, and water 4 frames.
Not sure what was wrong with the menu, odd.
ooh that is odd! Unfortunately I can't check what's wrong because THERE'S A PASSWORD. :v2_dizzy_mad:
just downloaded the corrected version from where Rindex was hosting it, and that's fine. I had no problems downloading it at all, so it's just you Meph :p
I can download it, but it wont let me open it.
I just use the animated graphics that came with Dizzyage, 4 frames or not.
I kinda had it with this game, lol it's been nothing but bloody trouble!!
Password is Zaks
I just use the animated graphics that came with Dizzyage, 4 frames or not.
No, in the editor 148water - 3 frame, 151bat and 152bird - 2 frames.
Yeah i know that, what i mean is i just used the graphics came with the dizzyage download.

Congratulations to everyone who participated!
I see it happens very often to have 2 games with the same no of points :) Just a reminder, the placing of such games is also based on the number of votes. If more people voted one game that ended up with the same number of points as another game that have been voted by fewer people, it means that the second one was more appreciated by each player. Not necessarily true (like if only the author votes 10) but here we have 14 vs 13 votes. Anyway everyone wins :)

If anyone else changed his postal address please let me know.
I'm glad we had a nice competition this year too, even if the time I put in it was much less than I wanted. Sorry again for the voting inconvenience. For the next I hope to do better and get more exposure. Maybe even a small update for the DizzyAGE website.
Thanks a lot for keeping Dizzy alive!
Alex
well done everyone! :v2_dizzy_clapping:
Well i was well and truly thrashed.. a real beating.
It's been a long time coming..finally got what i deserved. :D
Up yours Grandand :P lol
I not finished playing a couple of the games, but we had a real mix bag of styles so it's pretty hard to comparer one game to another. In fact no two games were alike... possibly the most varied with had.
