Ok, I've now tentatively started on the third and last chapter of my Dizzy Legends series, entitled Silence of The Storm.

I'm trying to draw enough tiles to be able to put together a representative screenshot for y'all, but at the same time I don't want to really start drawing the map for the first level before I've come up with all the puzzles.

I will say though, that the graphics should be quite a lot better than in CoTM... :v2_dizzy_wink:

In the meantime, I'll leave you with the story:

Dizzy Legends

A long time ago, countless years before the time of Dizzy and the present Yolkfolk, evil and oppression were the watchwords of the land. Common yolkfolk were suppressed, beaten and tortured. The land itself had a dark dank air of fear and terror, and an oppressive, twisted, and paranoid leader
ruled with an iron fist...

Chapter 3: Silence of The Storm

17 years have now passed since the great prophecy. The Lord of Darkness is now a complete recluse, having retreated deep into himself following the prophecy, succumbing to the depths of madness. Although he is now never seen by his subjects, his remaining followers have carried on his reign of fear and terror, themselves fearful of the extreme madness of the Lord.

Didier, the grandson of the late King Demetrius, has learned of the prophecy, and has returned to the site of his grandfathers now legendary reign in an attempt to fulfill it. Hopelessly inexperienced, he is immediately captured and held prisoner by followers of the Lord...

Here's a sort-of representative screenshot (I haven't drawn the character yet):

<img src="http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/pp106/eqixx/sots1.png">

As you can see, I've completely done away with the HUD, preferring to 'float' the HUD elements on the gamescreen.

:v2_dizzy_jawdrop: I gotta be honest, the graphic detail looks really good!

Definitely looking forward to this and happy to make a donation when it's published. One question though, did the hero's descendants move to Liverpool and form a coalition with Ken Dodd?:v2_dizzy_biggrin:

Right, I'm trying to draw the character, and I'm not sure what to think of the results so far:

thoughts?

btw, why is there dozens of 'dizzy sad' faces lined up across the top of the reply page? :v2_dizzy_confused3:

I don't see any.

tbh, I'm not too sure what to make of the character's appearence either. :umm: Possibly 50/50.

There isn't any now. Peter was on earlier, I suspect he fixed it.

Thanks! Thoughts on the character graphic?

Personally i don't like all the bits and bobs in the 'game screen' i liked to see the whole screen, other wise things get hidden behind them and just tend to find that kinda things annoying.. But nobody else seems to care.. lol

The character graphic looks a bit too 'cartoony' for his surroundings... it's the only thing i can think of, it's good but it just doesn't fit.. yet. Maybe it will look less out of place in the game.

Expanding the game window to the whole screen actually lets you see more. There's a 11 x 8 grid visible there, whereas in previous games you've only had a 7 x 5 grid visible.

Yes I think you're right, the character is a bit too cartoony, and a bit too bright as well I think. It does look out of place. hmmm...

huh?

Guessing that Grandad was making a play on words, you have called the character Didier, and Ken Dodd had the Diddy Men.

Looking good (as always!) Delta, but I do agree, the egg character does look a little out of place, to me it looks too high resolution, like a 16 bit graphic walking around an 8 bit environment, and being of a certain age, I do have a soft spot for the old 8 bit.
(not that I am saying the background looks 8 bit, it looks like you have updated and improved the graphics, and very nice they look too, but they have a kind of gloomy look to them in keeping with the atmosphere the storyline generates, and the egg looks very bright )

yes, I think that's true too.

Maybe another part of it is that the character is spherical rather than oval as in previous games, and that an egg shape simply looks too odd from above. I might be better going back to an oval shape.

Yeah i'd have to agree that it looks out of place. Maybe in a bigger map it doesn't.

The red colour seems too bright for its scenery.

I do like the lighting effect though

I've been playing around with the font and its positioning today. You can't see it on this screenshot, but the 'speech' text now appears above his head when he talks, and I've removed the scroll from the screen as it really didn't 'fit' in this game.

The thing about changing the size of the 'window' is that all the positioning of everything has to be changed too, because it centers itself to the stated width and height. If you alter that width and height then you have to alter it in the code too.

Oh and I've drawn some more flooring too, and darkened the character tile for that level. Does it look better now?

Anyway...

Looking at the screenshot with my 'art glasses' on I think it's the definition of the character that is causing problems in that the outline is too 'sharp' and doesn't really seem to fit with the general 'ambience' of the scenery. Have you thought about changing the outline from jet black to a very dark grey just to take the edge off?

The shading is perfect as are the floor tiles.

delta
24-11-11, 04:45 PM
Hmmm I might try that. Ironically I'll probably remove the shading on the character as it's too hard to keep it in one 'direction'.

Meph

Looks much better.

dammit things would be so much easier if Dizzy was a sphere!

I could also say things like ball-ocks when things were going wrong! haha

delta

Right, I've fully drawn the character tonight. I'm pretty pleased with it tbh! :)

I can darken the character a bit more if people think it needs to be.

I've also adjusted the positioning of items on the HUD from where they were in CoTM (not a massive job).

the outline map of the first level is now drawn. :) There's no detail in there yet though.

I've finalised all the puzzles for the first level today, and started drawing things like doors and switches. :)
