Im still questions how many to have in mine.. (but they will be hearts not coins) If everyones going to really high numbers i might need a bigger map as i was only planning 30 max.. lol something to think about.

Yes hearts to go with the theme of the game, well does make a change to coins doesn't it. Well my last was 30 which is usually plenty enough to be fair. Im going to edit opening post now youve mentioned the map.

well i actually meant a lot less collectible items in general. I usually hide between 40% and 50% of mine, depending on the game.

I've uploaded it onto Yolkfolk's ftp for now because most of the main site is down showing an error message on all the pages and unable to login to the Admin CP.

Fatal error: Smarty error: unable to write to $cache_dir '/home/yolkkcom/public_html/site/includes/cache'. Be sure $cache_dir is writable by the web server user. in /home/yolkkcom/public_html/site/includes/Smarty.class.php on line 1095

I've PM'd Peter and Andy about it and I'm still waiting to hear from them, so in the meantime you can download it here or on the DizzyAGE site when Alex uploads it.

Oh, and guys, in future would it be OK to use my new E-mail address found in my profile if you want to send any games? I'm having problems with my old one. (It's not been a good year so far :()

I'm gonna play the game now and let you know what I think later. :)

Found a bug, Items get lost/blend into Background when dropped.

Meant to mention this which I have now on the game notes, you have to use the playing environment wisely for placing down your items. Not a lot I can do about that anyway as otherwise you have to make all the items opaque which means you get a square, with the black surrounding the item.

Well you don't actually start at the hospital, it's just part of the 'attract mode' that shows at the beginning from the title screen if you let run a bit...you know where Dizzy automatically jumps about.

I think I've found an issue...

Warning spoiler!!!

I've managed to get past Zaks before covering the amulet. I'm guessing that it needs to have the potion from the pharmacist guy put over it, but I only have 49 coins so I couldn't buy it. I was then able to go on and complete the game without getting the potion or taking care of Zaks.

Hope this helps.

I managed to do that in testing, I'd thought I'd got so it couldn't be done as I was unable to do so then..I'm a bit concerned now if somehow ive picked up the earlier version when I continued working on it.

Testing it now it's difficult to get up and back down without dying, did you lose any lives ?

Edits:- You can get up (bugger), back down I can't manage without dying. Think I will block top of until the puzzle is complete though.

Thanks for highlighting.

I'm surprised at myself to be honest, but seeing as I've been playing since release with a break to sleep and eat....

I would never spoil the playing experiance by doing such a thing!

It is possible to get up without dying but back down wasn't possible. When I died on the way down, I respawned below the danger zone, making it possible to continue.

(obviously that's for ascending though)

My pleasure. Great game as well as one of the most difficult fan games i've played. Great work.

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to make the game?

I will finish the new version properly but I'll probably have a break before I do so, and technically I still haven't finished it, because I couldn't find the last coin.

I think in all about 5 months or so. Some stages I worked on it plentiful and other times I did very little for weeks.

Yes absolutely its part of the playing, as much as was really pleased with Swampland it prob was a bit on the easier side primarily as the puzzles were so logical in the main & enabled players to glide through it (certainly yourself did I recall). Now as with this it's taken 5 months roughly to make & as much as you want everyone to really enjoy it, you want to make a little challenging so it's not completed in like a day or so & add a bit more longevity to the game...so yes get the old grey matter spinning :v2_dizzy_happy:

Pleased your on the update version.

Argh!!!! I agree Quiggie, this is hard!! I have been running around the map for ages having uncovered (i think) 10 items, by a sheer stroke of luck I have managed to use 2 of them... After gaining another item by using one of the existing ones I felt sure I knew what to do with it but alas no :v2_dizzy_confused2: back to the drawing board. Great game so far though, despite the lack of progress, love the huts - very upmarket!!!

This really is quite a stunning little game graphically! I've not had too much chance to play it, but I really do like the style of it, and I think it shows that no matter how many games you do, someone will always think of a different idea, or a new way of doing something (such as the treehouses).

Ok, the latest version (v1.02) is up on DizzyAGE too.
Sorry for the delay.

delta
22-01-10, 09:58 PM
I haven't seen the custom tiles, however i'm guessing that they have a black outline around them, enabling them to be seen easier.

The reason the original tiles don't have that black outline is because DizzyAGE was originally made to be as faithful to the original games as possible. And of course the original games had items with black squares as backgrounds. Even in IID and WWD they still have that, although they may not in any future games of mine.

Personally I think that if someone wishes to give them a black border and re-colour them so that they stand out more, then that's up to them, and it's pretty easy to do so if they so wish. However I think DizzyAGE was primarily made to make games in the style of the Spectrum Dizzy games, so that's the reason why they have the black backgrounds, and why they don't look too good when you 'blend' them.

:)

delta

Yes I follow, so you either have to have the black backgrounds which I don't like and make opaque or not and just have the item itself without but then it's not easy to see them.

With the tiles from Colin it resolves both of those :dizzy_cool:

IMHO most people now are moving away from the graphical style of the Spectrum, and using more colours, overlapping colours a lot, etc etc. I know when the first few DizzyAGE games were released, people (well, me and peter!) kinda kept to the same style of graphics that we knew, and tbh didn't really think about doing things that differently. (hell, it took me 9 games to finally give in and give dizzy red gloves!)

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just saying that with new people come new ideas, and maybe it's taking the older coders (i.e. me!) a while to catch up, and to realise that the players don't actually mind if graphics aren't faithful to how they'd appear on the spectrum.

A good example of this is the scaling. It was never in DizzyAGE v1.31, and personally I've never really used it (apart from the arcade games in IID), as I feel that it's just wrong - original dizzy games never had more than the 192x256 pixels, and scaling effectively gives a game more than that. I notice that the newer coders seem to have no such issues about scaling up or down, and i guess that it's a result of the option always being there for them, but to me it's just something that i'll probably never use. (Incidentally, I did consider drawing all the tiles for CoTM twice as big, but scaling them to 50% size in the map, which would have effectively doubled the detail in the game, but decided against it...)

I hope that makes some sense!

xelanoimis
23-01-10, 07:42 AM
The scaling, oh the scaling!
I wish I didn't have this feature!

Just kidding, but because there is no filtering (which is to be fateful to Z80 Dizzy style), the scaling looks bad and turns a good looking sprite into one with "missing pixels". Not to mention the "smaller pixels" which is a result of scaling tiles down when the whole game is scaled up.

There, I said it again :)

Creating a smaller version of a tile isn't really hard. There are a few tricks to avoid filtering. For example in Photoshop you convert it to 256 colors first, then scale, then repaint the "missing pixles" like for contours or so, then convert it back the true color and save it as tga. And don't forget about the alpha channel. I'm sure Gimp has similar functions.

Lord Dizzy of Yolkfolk
23-01-10, 08:27 AM
Blimey I dunno, sounds a lot of messing about & time consuming that to do for each tile and if you didn't quite get the size you needed when you got to the map youve be having to do all again to keep adjusting. There again it seems like that to me as I really don't know how to draw tiles in that way.

At least with the scaling it's instant, extremely easy and whether it's cos I have quite a decent size monitor doesn't seem a problem (just have to be economical with it).

Lord Dizzy of Yolkfolk

I think myself has had the advantage of being later than some of yourselves as ive been able to learn bits from everyone else & utilise them all together. In terms of the colours, use of tiles, basically seems they have evolved & improved from the original traditional base. Your example of dizzy getting his red gloves being a good one. Personally I think those who made these improvements have given the opportunity (for anyone & the likes of me) to create far better graphical & colourful, less bland looking games should they attempt to do so because of these options. I still feel it is staying faithful, it's just an evolution to more colour.

a colourised dizzy isn't really a problem at all for me. i grew up using an amstrad. it didn't suffer the colour clash that the speccy did. the ollivers didn't have a problem colourising dizzy from the first adventure.here's dizzy from Dizzy TUCA

and if anyone wants the altered default item tiles
items tiles.zip (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/colin.page33/items%20tiles.zip)

I gave v1.02 a play today - Wow! This is graphically stunning!! Good original music too. I think some puzzles are hard, but that adds to the fun. Big thumbs up!!!

Cheers Mate :v2_dizzy_thumbsup:

It makes all the time spent putting the work in so worthwhile to get the game to that level when you get feedback like that...
appreciated :v2_dizzy_happy:

Continue to enjoy the rest of the game !!!

Sorry, I've discovered a bug!
I intermittently die when leaving storeroom

Unfortunately its part of the problem I had in the progress thread, I dunno why it happens. It can happen on the others, it just seems so random.

Apart from the bug in the storeroom where you die, i found a couple of minor ones (tho they might have been found already)
- Scuba Dizzy momentarily disappears when he eats something
- When exiting the library the message says you are entering the library
- couple of minor typos eg - neutalize; lovee

All in all, Im loving this game - The graphics are beautiful and the story works very well.
Usually in a game this size, I'd prefer a little less walking, but with such nice scenery it's hard to complain.
I love that theres a story developing around the lesser known Grandmother Dizzy!!!

Great stuff - I hope you choose to enter it in the comp - it's bound to be a heavyweight contender :)

Yes the one Colin identified and the scuba whilst eating I mentioned in the progress thread I couldnt resolve prior to release on testing. I dunno why they happen in all honesty.

I will correct those on the dialogue messages for another release in due course but as they don't affect the game I woudn't recommend anyone starting again. Would just be for anyone new to downloading the game.

Thanks for highlighting, I could of sworn though I corrected the one in the library...obviously not, I just copied the text, musn't have changed it.

Edits:- Amended that for the library but I can't find the 'neutralize' with the 'r' missing

Seems your getting well into the game now :v2_dizzy_clapping:

Yes will be in the comp :v2_dizzy_happy:

(if I don't respond to anyones elses messages tonight it's because im out)

Regarding the scuba bug while eating, check that the tile exists. It will be calling a tile ID that doesn't exist most likely, so make sure the scuba eating tile is the correct number.

it doesn't! just extract this into your dizzy tile set when you next update.

With that & the amendment for exiting the library I will at some point do another update release.

v1.03 now sent for release

Corrects the scuba whilst eating & the narrative
message when leaving the library.

Only for those new to the game. Existing players
can continue as they don't affect the gameplay.

:v2_dizzy_clapping:

I think I had a few unused items tho, are there supposed to be any red herrings? I also think I picked up an item called "Bubble1" ??? but when I dropped it it disappeared...

Excellent, congrats, im rather impressed, seems no problem in finding the coins either :v2_dizzy_clapping: :v2_dizzy_clapping:

Yes a few red herrings. The bubble, just part of Dizzy breathing underwater but you have to assign in effect an ID to it (acts like an item but isn't).

Has anyone noticed that if you jump left from 'Street Lamps' into 'Village Post Office' you can do a double height jump?? I cant see any point to it as there doesnt appear to be anything to land on, so is this a minor glitch?

Edit: you also do this jumping in from 'Towards the station'

Hey, that's kinda cool :D

Well spotted, it works both sides, if I knew how to do that properly that could come in very useful in a game.

I assume there'll just be an errant 'climb' material there which enables you to jump again. either that or it's wrong positioning...

I found a bug.
When you use the heavy box to raise the columns you get an invalid brush error message.

And theres a duplicate id (might have something to do with the new item tiles you added)

Not sure what Version im playing i downloaded the one from Dizzyage (1.04) i think)

Oh drat....this has come out the blue as I would of thought if was a bug like that players would have highlighted earlier...if you click no on the error message I think it lets you continue playing ok. I'm looking into it but not sure whats causing it yet.

EDITS:-I know what is causing it now.

Meph,

Not sure what is happening as I can't get the script to update at all, even just testing on putting in different text, run the game and it's with the old (have checked im on the right script to the right version) :dizzy_confused:

EDITS:-
That's weird, I had a copy of the PAK file in the folder, move that out and can now, keep it in and won't update. Must some how be referencing to the PAK ??

I've done that before. Chances are that the game is running using the pak file, and you've changed the data folder, so it won't be running the changed version. rename the pak file so that the game doesn't look for it, and uses the data folder instead.

Yes that seemed to be what it was doing.

Right sorted the bug out so will be sending v1.05 to Alex & Adz. Im surprised with that appearing as it wasn't a problem on the earlier versions so I must have affected it whilst sorting some of the other few out.

Thanks for highlighting it to me Meph.

I can't buy flask for 50 coins. This is programming bug. If I change variable "maxcoins" in game script to fixed "50" is no problem buying flask. Release 1.05 is not finishable - it should be fixed immediately...
