View Full Version : Winter Nightmare Dizzy v1.0 [DOWNLOADABLE]
You can now download my latest game, Winter Nightmare Dizzy! :)
I've already said that it's only taken me 2 days to fully code, however I've been fixing bugs in it ever since I finished it, including one that I found just two days ago!
It's a pretty small game, and won't be too hard for most people, so as is usual with my small games, there is no 'save game' facility. However it is possible to complete it in under 20 minutes (providing you can find the last collectible item ;) ).
One last thing. If you like it, please feel free to donate! :)

Story:
It's Christmas Eve and Dizzy is tired from decorating the village, so he settles down for a quick nap on his bed, and quickly falls into a deep sleep! He starts to dream that he's lost all the Christmas presents he's bought for the other Yolkfolk, and can't wake up until he's found them!
Join Dizzy to help him negotiate his snowy winter nightmare, find all the presents, and wake himself up before he misses Christmas Day altogether!

Good job Jamie
I like the look of this game - reminds me of a very enjoyable Dizzy game...But I wont spoil the surprise for others
This is a very pleasant seasonal treat - and for a small game it still feels like theres lots to explore.
I especially like the x-ray machine - a nice touch:)
I think this game really needs a save feature or more lives game and an energy bar - I lost count the number of times i died from bats and falling in the water
Have I found bug no1?
On the very first screen - picking up the ice cube - doesnt appear in the inventory
Edit - Stupid me - just realised the ice blocks are like coins
It's now up on Yolkfolk.com :)

I have to disagree and say "No way"! It's a challenge, do we really want to be able to walk through every game we play straight off the bat because we can save/reload whenever we want? How is that fun? The quick save feature kills a lot of PC games stone dead. I remember some of the parts on Playstation Tomb Raider being so heart pounding because you knew you had to make it to the next save crystal before getting killed / falling to your death. On the PC that was totally killed off because you could press F5 or whatever to quick save before every jump, enemy or dangerous situation. I loath the save anywhere feature. Any tension or feeling of satisfaction immediately equals zero. Even great games like Half Life 2 are ruined by it... A checkpoint system (that also keeps track of your current state, e.g. lives and ammo etc.) are much better devices in such games. Take Halo for example - The battle before you may seem ridiculously overwhelming, but you know that if you can just get through the next conflict alive there's a checkpoint waiting for you. I realise that cannot be applied in DizzyAGE, but I'm just trying to stress that I enjoy challenge!
When did everyone become so soft!? :v2_dizzy_frown:

I'm only one Ice Cube remaining as we speak, but only one life too! I feel like I've looked in all of the classic Jamie spots (finding them was a little easier thanks to having completed Winter World Dizzy not too long ago!), but this last Ice Cube is baking my noodle...and [SPOILER!] I need it to get into the final room to retrieve what I suspect to be Denzil's gift to complete the game! Hey... Unless... That's Dizzy's gift as a reward, and I should be looking for Denzil's elsewhere... I haven't found a use for the dry firewood yet......

It is a right bugger, I only found it by a massive stroke of luck!
Another great game, Jamie. Really enjoyed it. I like the old scenery with a new set of puzzles idea, hope you do more. I thought the lack of save feature was the right decision as it's only a small game and it adds to suspense. I was down to my last life when I stumbled upon the last ice cube, you swiiiine! Well done, old bean. Jolly good show
Thank you all! :)
I must admit, that last ice cube has to be in one of the most devious positions i've ever thought of :p
It is the one thing that stops the game from being dead easy. :dizzy_cool:

who says it can't? It could probably be applied quite easily, it's just that no-one can really be bothered to, and also the fact that most Dizzy games don't really lend themselves to it. If i ever do a follow-up to Treasure Tomb, I may well incorporate something like save 'points'.

I think I may have stumbled across a bug, unless it's intentional of course! When I examine the logo in the secret room, it animates! I'm guessing you applied this on purpose though?

;) a nice touch, I thought!
love the concept of this game great fun so far.
In 15 minutes i have lost 9 lives and i haven't I've only just found Denzil.
But it's a clear example with no health or saves don't work... you can't not jump off the side of the tree house safely..a real pain when your looking for the last coins and decide to experiment jumping off the side to end up dead.
the bat near the castle for example.. i kept re spawning right above it and have lost 2 games the exactly same way, it get killed instantly.. ob cause this would be an issue with health bar but easily fixed if you had saved much of the hard work before hand.
It dones't make the game any hard just frustrating and less enjoyable.unlikely to see it through. especially if your trying to find the last coin and don't want to play it or night.

A fair point, well made.
I stick to my guns with the save feature, in that I'll only include it if the game is larger than about 80 - 100 rooms. a game with only about 30ish rooms is way too small for it.
I removed the health bar because WWD didn't have one either, and I figured that this game too would be fine without one, which it mostly is, you just have to watch out for the bats occasionally. I have completed it without dying at all, so it is possible, however I realise that trying things like big jumps is a bit riskier than it would otherwise be.
C'est la vie! :v2_dizzy_tongue2:

You're too soft, Meph ;) Are you implying then that the first three official Dizzy games didn't work? They had no save feature and no health bar and two of them had collectibles. All three of them had larger maps, too.
I think that we have become too spoiled and thoughts of traditional arcade gaming have been removed in favour of quick-saves and soft options.
Still, to each his own opinion and I know you have mentioned several times that you prefer to play in small chunks to resume at a later time and go back in to solve the puzzles. But for me the puzzles are only half the game.
I relish a challenge and, let's be honest, this is hardly the most hardcore Dizzy game nor was it designed to be. My clock was on about thirty minutes when I hit 24/25 Ice Cubes earlier... So saving for later isn't really an issue. If you are frustrated with dying after only having played three times (you mentioned spending nine lives earlier) and have already decided to accept defeat then I have to say you show far more patience with your excellent animations than you do with Dizzy :dizzy_cool:
died again.. two lives on that same bat falling from the tree house (i keep rolling off the edge)
Not soft just crap.. im sure theses bats are smarter then the average bat.
I play in small chucks because i get board quickly, and if i can't solve the next puzzle, i tend to switch off and think about while i do other things, but having to keep restarting gets boring, 'been there done that' theres only so much hitting the same rock with the picake i can take on on night,
As for the first Dizzy games not working.. theres a difference in a 10 year old me playing them then a 26 year old me.. and to be honest its the reason i don't play really 'any' computer games anymore because i no longer have the patience. I hate not playing the fan dizzies because of all the hard work put into them.
However i do like the concept of this game, it's Christmas, the x-ray machine kicks butt and im determined to do it before the 25th.. lol
(and winter world i gave up with that for the same reasons)

Hi Meph, I've checked this out myself and I now know what you mean... Jamie, it would appear there's a slight issue with the spawn point if you get killed by the bat on the screen to the right of Dylan, if you hit it by falling straight down onto it. The spawn is in the air where you enter the screen, but the position of the bat isn't reset after dying so it is possible to get killed by it immediately again after you spawn. Similar to the bug that plagued Dizzy - The Ultimate Cartoon Adventure, where you could repeatedly spawn above an apple that killed you upon contact.
yeah i realised as soon as he said. I generally re-spawn dizzy where he entered the room if he's killed by critters, as it's usually the most fool-proof way of dealing with the respawn issue. I realise it's a bit of an issue with that bat though.
not found the problem with other bats.. but then I've not gotten far.
A headache all day has prevented me for playing and i now feel rotten... gonna have a blast out tomorrow or end of next week when my work contract runs outs for the year.

Congratulations Jamie!
I've just uploaded it on DizzyAGE:

Alex
Thanks Alex!
although I'd say it's 'small', not 'medium' :)
Finished! I found the cube's hidden location by accident after seeing the help thread :p.
I sped through the game on my second attempt (with 2 minor cock-ups) and I finished it in 18 minutes dead. :)
(Dare I say it) I think you could update Winter World with a timer and see long It'll take to beat that quickly :v2_dizzy_happy: .

It might be small on your standards :) but if it's a fully playable game with more than 10 rooms and some story to support it, I'd say it's a "medium". I reserve "small" for games like "Mushroom Pie" and similar. Still, I didn't play it yet (I've just returned from a short vacantion).

oh ok, It's just that you have WWD as 'small', and it's smaller than that! :)
plus adz can finish it in 18 mins! :p

For some reason every time I try to speed run the game I screw something up, this time it was frustratingly right near the end... I missed the jump going up/left on the Dylan screen to the platform that takes you onto the screen above. Rolled right over it. So that means this time is beatable by at least 8 or 9 seconds.... I did try to video capture it using camstudio, but the input lag makes it incredibly hard to do.

I don't think I'll be trying myself any time soon... That was my fifth run through in a row trying to get anywhere near Adz' time! Cock-ups a-plenty meant in one run I struggled to even keep it inside 20 minutes, so every time I got to the end I took a screen shot of the game and pasted it with the others into an MS paint overall canvas so I could pick out the best one and post it here... Just looking at them now, one of them was 18:45 but the second to last one was a rather embarrassing 21:03 with only one life left! So I thought all my birthday's had come at once with this run... Until that final spoiled jump. If anyone has the willpower to go through it with no mistakes whatsoever, you're a better man than I :-P

I did it!! :v2_dizzy_happy: After dying countless times, of course. It says 56M 23S for this last game (does it keep counting while I'm alt-tabbed away?).
And wow! I would never have found that last ice cube without the help thread! But I did find the rest on my own. Great game :v2_dizzy_clapping:

and yes it does keep counting while you do other stuff. the only way to pause it is to press escape to bring the game menu up.
